The UNESCO World Summit on Teachers will address the global challenge of teacher shortages and advocate for sustained support for teachers, and to valorize the profession in a challenging economic and socio-political context. Led by UNESCO, hosted by the Government of Chile, it is organized in conjunction with the meeting of the SDG 4 Education 2030 High-Level Steering Committee.

This joint initiative comes at a pivotal moment as the international community advances the recommendations of the United Nations Secretary-General High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession and the UNESCO & Teacher Task Force 2024 Global Report on Teachers is reinforcing the urgent need for coordinated action to address teacher challenges worldwide.

The World Summit on Teachers will take place in Santiago, Chile, on 28 and 29 August 2025, preceded by an optional day of cultural events on 27 August. 

The World Summit on Teachers aims to strengthen international commitments, amplified through the SDG4 HLSC, to coordinate global action, policy alignment, and sustained investment to address teacher shortages and elevate the status of the profession, supported by an outcome document and reinforced partnerships.

Discussions will focus on the challenges facing the teaching workforce worldwide, examining policy solutions and trade-offs in filling teacher gaps – both in quantity and quality – and enhancing the status of the teaching profession, along with trends in teacher education and professional development, including strategies to improve social dialogue teacher participation in education decision-making. The analysis will also explore promising practices to increase funding for teachers, improve the efficiency and equity of teacher spending, consider gender equality trends and analyze the challenges and opportunities of digitalization and AI for the teaching profession.
